How a Family Holiday Turned Into a Lifelong Diving Adventure

In 2023, after years of trying to coordinate everyone’s schedules, we finally managed to organise a longawaited family holiday to the Maldives. All of us are happiest when we’re in or near the sea, so our plan was simple: spend as much time as possible snorkelling on the resort’s incredible house reef.

Before the trip, we headed to Ocean Turtle Diving in Basingstoke to kit out my (now fully grown!) kids with new masks and snorkels. The team there couldn’t have been more helpful. Instead of pushing the most expensive gear, they focused purely on what would fit well and work best for each of us. That honesty and expertise made the whole experience a pleasure.

While researching our resort in the Maldives, we noticed it had its own dive centre. That sparked a thought: what if we tried diving instead of just snorkelling?

After speaking with the dive centre in the Maldives and giving it some real thought, my daughter and I decided to go for it. We signed up for our PADI Open Water qualification, completing all the theory, classroom and pool components with Ocean Turtle before the holiday. That meant we could maximise our time in the Maldives while still earning our certification.
