The Rescue Diver course teaches you how to prevent and manage dive emergencies, look after yourself and assist other divers. It focuses on awareness, problem-solving, and confidence, both underwater and on the surface.
It’s ideal for divers who want to become more confident, more capable, and more aware of their surroundings. Many divers say it’s the most challenging but most rewarding course they take.
You must be a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent) and be at least 12 years old (Junior Rescue Diver for ages 12–14). You also need:
Emergency First Response (EFR) or equivalent first aid & CPR training within the last 24 months. Can be added on when booking Rescue course
A completed medical questionnaire
You’ll learn how to:
Recognise and prevent potential problems before they happen
Assist tired, panicked, or unresponsive divers
Manage emergency situations calmly and effectively
Perform surface rescues and exit techniques
Develop strong teamwork and communication skills
The course takes 2 days.
1st Day Classroom and Pool session (EFR can be done in the classoom on the same day)
2nd Day Open Water
It’s more demanding than previous courses, but it’s also very rewarding. It involves realistic scenarios and physical activity, but everything is taught step by step with full instructor support. The course is there to give you confidence to get involved in a situation if needed.
There is no final written exam. You’ll complete short knowledge reviews related to each scenario dive within PADI eLearning.
The next step is the PADI Divemaster course, which is the first professional-level certification. Many divers also go on to take PADI specialty courses.
Because it:
Greatly improves your confidence and awareness
Makes you a better dive buddy
Teaches real-life safety skills
Is one of the most respected and valued recreational dive courses
